How to make Opera open torrent files automatically

Howdy!

This is something which has bothered me for quite some time, but I haven’t really looked into it. If you used opera before they went over to using Chromium, you probably remembers that you could make Opera open torrent files automatically and, if you wanted to, assign a specific program/application to handle said file. Well, this is something they removed and from what I know, aren’t really planning on bringing back.

torrent files downloaded, but has to be manually clicked.

Well, I’ll show you how to make Opera open it automatically again, provided you have a torrent application, such as uTorrent installed. This is how to do it in a Windows environment.

First off, browse to the location below on your PC. If you don’t have “Show hidden files and folders” turned on, make sure you do that beforehand.

C:\Users\your username\Roaming\Opera\Opera Software\Opera Stable

Once inside that folder, locate the file named “Preferences”. Make sure Opera isn’t currently open, before opening this file.

Depending on how long you’ve had Opera installed, or how many tabs you had open last time, this file might have a lot of info in it. Anyways, once the file is open, I suggest you search or locate this portion:

“download”:[“default_directory”:”The location you’ve set it to download files”,”directory_upgrade”:true}

Now, to make Opera automatically open those torrent files, all you need to do is add this to that line:

“extensions_to_open”:”torrent”

So, how this will look in your code on that line is: (I added how I’ve set my download location)

“download”:[“default_directory”:”F:\\Chrome Downloads”,”directory_upgrade”:true,“extensions_to_open”:”torrent”}

There you go! Hope it worked out for you. Feel free to add a comment or if you have any questions, I’ll try and help.
